Portuguese Man o , War

When birdwatching yesterday with Mr Hill and Mr Bell we found these six Portugese Man O . War  on the Lougher Estuary. They were an amazing sight to see and I have since learnt not a jelly fish at all, a Marine Hydrozoan and a Siphonophone. They look very alien and would have been brilliant to see on the sea and not end their days up an estuary. It made our day.

You can just make out the stingers and would be a hell of a shock to swim into. They are also called Blue Bottle or my favourite Floating Terror.

  1. They were brilliant. Also some good birds Brambling, Whooper Swans, Tree Sparrows, Red Breasted Merganser.

  2. Nice photos. There were quite a few on the beaches in Cornwall. A national trust worker, I met, mending footpaths told me that in the recent storms, they were taking to the air and being blown well inland.
It would be a bit of a shock to walk out of your front door and get a Portuguese Man-o-War smack in the mush.

  3. The Men o' war were the icing on the cake, but a good day out.
