Shapwick

Nice day out on Sunday to Shapwick with Martin Bevan and Robert Gaze. Arrived about 6.45 in glorious weather which just got warmer and warmer has the day progressed. Unfortunately it was also the quietest we could remember the reserve at this time of year. We certainly had some good birds including Bittern x 7 plus a lot more heard, a Bearded Tit, Hobby x 2 which was my 200th bird of the year and loads of Marsh Harriers but overall bird wise it was surprisingly subdued.. We also dipped on the Purple Heron which was seen in the morning when we were standing a few hundred yards away where it had been seen previously, such is life.

Insects were much more common and I picked up my first dragonflies of the year up, 6 species in total, also there were pleny of butterflies around.

A quick trip to Greylake was also disappointing where we failed to get Yellow Wagtail as we normally do partly due to the vegetation being a lot higher than normal there.
