Swan Lake

When last summer two Adult Mute Swans turned up at Abercwmboi Lake, all the locals were very happy to see them including me who was over the moon. Everybody said how nice it would be if they bred, they built a nest earlier in the spring which failed and we thought it must be down to Electric Board cutting a tree near the nest. They left the nest and the eggs but she built again in a different place and all was looking well until the cob flew into the power lines and was taken into care by the RSPCA who said they will fetch him back if he was ok. Well the pen keeped sitting on the eggs for what seemed weeks,  everyone was wondering how would she feed herself and sit but she mangered it. I saw on facebook last night they had two cygnets and went today to see them for myself. It was pretty warm there this morning and it was buzzing with life, I saw a Painted Lady and this female Common Blue butterfly. I also got three different damselflies which were Azure, Large Red and Blue Tailed, all three colour types were there this morning. Also got my first Common Darter and a male Emperor Dragonfly. Also of note was a Brown China Mark moth on the wing, lots of Scorpion flies and this Bumble Bee Mimic fly. The Tufted Duck count has gone up to two drakes now, it's like the old days when they moulted over most of the summer at the lake.

  1. Martin, that's great news about the swans. I'm afraid that I was in the camp which said she had no chance of getting the eggs to hatch, over the moon to be proved wrong.
